 City of Johannesburg Johannesburg was born out of the discovery of gold. The city was founded in 1886 and named after a surveyor Johan Rissik who was sent to select a site for the village and Johannes Joubert was the mining commissioner. It is a city filled with excitement and contrasts through the unique cultural and social history of the people. Museums, cultural precincts, performing arts, theme parks, shopping and entertainment centres, craft markets, wildlife reservations and casinos all combine to create a unique experience for the visitor.
